TWO inmates at Bulawayo Prison who were assigned to clean cars within the correctional institution were arrested after they tried to smuggle dagga into the prison.
In their warned and cautioned statements the two inmates Thembani Maseko (27) and Trust Rutsito (25) claimed they were given the dagga by one of the prison officers only identified as Moyo.
They jointly stated that Moyo sternly ordered them that upon being searched and found in possession of the illicit drug they should lie that they got it from one Ndlovu who is also a prison officer.
Maseko was found in possession of two twists of dagga and Rutsito with one with a street value of $9 and $2 respectively.
Circumstances are that on 2 January this year at around 10am the two inmates were assigned to clean cars which were within the Bulawayo Prison yard.
It is reported that at around 5pm when they finished their chores while being escorted to the holding cells they were searched by Freeman Moyo a prison officer who found them each in possession of the illegal weed.
They were subsequently arrested and referred to CID Drugs Section where the dagga was weighed in their presence.
Masekoa��s loot weighed nine grammes while that of Rutsito weighed two grammes.
For the offence the two inmates were hauled before Bulawayo magistrate Franklin Mkwananzi charged with contravening section 157 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 (found in possession of dagga).
They were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody. .
