THE transfer ban handed down to Golden Arrows has already dominated headlines, but insiders close to the situation insist the real story lies in the breakdown of the South African football club’s relationship with Zimbabwean striker Knox Mutizwa long before FIFA became involved.
Mutizwa had been one of the most loyal figures at the Durban side, scoring 63 goals since arriving in 2017.
According to people familiar with the situation, the collapse was not sudden but the result of a long period of frustration that eventually led the Zimbabwean forward to take the matter to FIFA. A Siya source, who observed the situation unfold, told the crew that Mutizwa felt increasingly sidelined in his final months. “Things changed behind the scenes,” the insider said. “He felt the communication from the club was not straight anymore. He would be told one thing about his future and then see something completely different happening the next day. That’s when he realised the trust was gone.”
The source explained that the tension grew worse when Mutizwa noticed he was being phased out without any clear explanation.
“For a player who gave that many years to the club, he expected honesty. Instead, he felt pushed aside. He was left out of training and removed from the team WhatsApp group, he knew the relationship had broken completely.” Another source revealed that unresolved financial matters added fuel to the fire.
“He tried to deal with it quietly and internally at first, but he felt blocked. Every attempt to sort things out went nowhere, so he took the case where he believed he would get a fair hearing.” The fallout ended a seven-year spell that saw Mutizwa become one of Arrows’ most reliable performers, only for the relationship to deteriorate to a point where reconciliation became impossible.
He has since moved on to Richards Bay, while Arrows have been left to reckon with the consequences of a situation insiders believe could have been avoided with clearer communication and transparency.
