A MAN from Insuza in Umguza District allegedly fatally assaulted his wife and tried to conceal the crime by burying her body in a shallow grave in the bush.
Tryforward Mpofu (35) from Sishawe Village accused his wife, Revai Rusive (36) of infidelity when they returned from selling charcoal in Bulawayo on June 4, triggering a violent altercation at a bus stop in Insuza.
Mpofu allegedly assaulted Rusive with switches and kicked her all over the body resulting in her death. Mpofu allegedly confessed the murder to his mother and a member of the neighbourhood watch committee. Matabeleland North police spokesperson, Inspector Glory Banda, said Mpofu had been arrested for the alleged murder.
“Mpofu and Rusive left their place of residence on 3 June to sell charcoal in Bulawayo. Mpofu arrived back home alone the following day and his mother, Ms Letters Ncube, asked about the whereabouts of his wife, and he lied that she had fled to an unknown destination following an altercation,” he said.
His mother told him to look for her. Last Thursday Mpofu allegedly started selling his goats claiming he wanted money to look for his wife.
His mother became suspicious and alerted a member of the local neighbourhood watch committee who took the two to the police station.
Along the way, Mpofu confided to his mother and the neighbourhood watch committee member that he had killed his wife leading to his arrest.
Mpofu led police to the shallow grave where he had buried his wife along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway, and it was retrieved. The body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
