THE Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), Mr Daren Tang arrived in the country yesterday for a three-day official visit.
He is expected to pay a courtesy call on President Mnangagwa in Harare this morning.
Mr Tang was welcomed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi.
He said the purpose of his visit is to understand how Zimbabwe is managing and advancing its intellectual property (IP) systems to support national development.
“This is my first official visit to Harare, Zimbabwe. I am here really to see how intellectual property can be a catalyst for growth and development of the country,” he said.
Mr Tang noted that Zimbabwe is endowed with abundant natural resources and rich human capital, both capable of transforming ideas into tangible economic gains.
“You have great entrepreneurs; there is a lot of music and culture, and there are many young talented entrepreneurs.
“You want to support all of them to be successful,” he said.
Mr Tang reiterated that intellectual property remains a key driver of economic growth, not only for Zimbabwe, but for the continent as a whole.
“Intellectual property is a way to develop, a way to grow, a way to succeed,” he said.
During his visit, Mr Tang is scheduled to tour the Museum of African Liberation, among other engagements.
