STAKEHOLDERS have gathered at Sengezane Primary School in Gwanda for the district’s International Literacy Day commemorations.
Matabeleland South Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mrs Lathiso Dlamini-Maseko, is set to officiate at the event.
The event is being held under the theme: “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity”. The theme moves beyond traditional reading and writing. It defines literacy as an active tool for inclusion and lifelong learning. Literacy gives individuals the power to make informed health choices, navigate digital systems and participate in society.
Reading and writing skills help people understand and engage with global challenges such as climate action and community resilience. Foundational literacy connects directly to job access, economic stability and reducing poverty.
The event is organised by Edward Ndlovu Memorial Trust. It seeks to bring together students from various schools to participate in a series of activities aimed at promoting a culture of reading and celebrating the importance of literacy. Students will compete in activities such as quizzes and reading.
International Literacy Day is an international observance celebrated each year on 8 September. It was declared by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at the 14th session of UNESCO’s General Conference and celebrated for the first time in 1967.
The day’s aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
Observance of the day moves beyond seeing reading and writing as simple personal abilities. It frames literacy as a vital driver for global inclusion, sustainable growth and economic opportunity.
