introduce retention allowances for college lecturers to curb the departure of experienced personnel for greener pastures.
Addressing stakeholders at the Agriculture Sector Workshop held in Harare recently, Mrs Madzime said although the staff situation had stabilised this year, with only five lecturers leaving, the majority that remained lacked experience to adequately impart skills to students.
“Many of the lecturers are very green and still need experience,” she said.
“Most have not done training of trainers’ courses.
“It should also be noted that as soon as they gain experience they leave the department. There is generally low morale among staff members in the institutions because of poor remuneration. Agricultural institutions are unique in that they train and do farming activities, but do not have any incentives.”
Mrs Madzime revealed that members who go on leave were only given a quarter or half of their salaries, while there was no retention allowances.
