Speaking to Chronicle Entertainment, director of the festival Raisedon Baya said the auditions were in line with the festival’s vision to promote budding artistes.
“The Eziko auditions are the festival’s continued efforts to promote young and emerging artistes and also to take some of Intwasa’s activities to the high-density suburbs,” said Baya.
He said the holding of the second edition of auditions was also the first of collaborations between Intwasa and Victory Siyanqoba, particularly with Victory’s Eziko Theatre Laboratory project.
The first auditions took place in April and four promising acts progressed to the finals on the last day of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair and saw four promising groups qualifying for the finals pencilled in for end of August at the Bulawayo Theatre.
The groups that qualified during the first auditions are the all-female hip hop ensemble Hip-Hop Honeys, another all-female singing group Ladies singers, the new Imbube outfit Mbube, and gospel singer Baba.
The third and final audition will be held in July at Amakhosi Cultural Centre. The last four acts will come from the third and final audition at Amakhosi Cultural Centre in July. These 12 qualifying acts will then meet in August for the finals where the winning act shall receive a cash prize of $500 and a chance to perform during Intwasa’s official opening show at the City Hall Car Park on 19 September.
The variety show which was inaugurated last year unearthed the amazing talents of Family Voices and Break Equation. The two have gone on to perform on bigger stages like National Arts Merit Awards, Harare International Festival of the Arts and other national events.
The show is modelled around talent shows such as America’s Got Talent or the South African version of the same show and is a build-up show to Intwasa Festival koBulawayo to be held from 18 to 22 September 2012.
