Invest in irrigation development, farmers urged

FARMERS should invest in irrigation systems to climate-proof their agricultural activities that are currently facing threats from low rainfall patterns.

Speaking to Pumula Farm owner, Mr Arnold Chaeruka and other Hurungwe farmers at a field day this morning, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development permanent secretary, Dr John Basera said there was need for farmers to shift from relying on rain-feeding crops to irrigation.

He encouraged farmers to take advantage of various schemes introduced by Government to avail irrigation equipment at low cost.

Farmers are urged to apply for irrigation systems through the Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ)’s National Enhanced Agriculture Production Scheme (NEAPS) irrigation fund and AFC scheme.

Mr Chaeruka has put 400 hectares under maize funded through the CBZ Agro-yield Scheme.
