A 21-year-old man who allegedly fled from Inyathi in Matabeleland North Province after fatally attacking a man with an axe has been arrested while hiding in Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb.
Police allege that the suspect repeatedly struck the victim on the head and legs with an axe before fleeing the scene, triggering a manhunt that ended with his arrest in Cowdray Park.
Kwanele Mpala was picked up by Bulawayo police a day after he fled Inyathi after hitting the late Teflford Hadasi (47) when the two allegedly had a misunderstanding while drinking beer.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the suspect was arrested barely 24 hours later after allegedly committing the crime.
“A misunderstanding arose between the suspect and the deceased over an unknown issue and Mpala allegedly struck Hadasi several times with an axe on the head and legs.
“The deceased sustained deep cuts on the head and legs and later succumbed to the injuries. The suspect fled the scene and on 31 May, police received a tip off that he was hiding in Cowdray Park, leading to his arrest,” said Insp. Msebele.
“We appreciate and urge members of the public to continue cooperating with the police by reporting criminal activities, providing information that assist in the investigations and arrest of offenders,”
