Iranian president-elect speaks out

“We hope that all the world countries take advantage of this opportunity, since using this chance will benefit all sides,” he added.

The incoming president stressed that “interaction with Iran will be in the interest of both the Islamic republic and the world. “
President-elect Rouhani also said that his country will try to be more “transparent” in its nuclear issue to “build confidence.”

“The sanctions are problems, which Iran face today and all of us know that they are oppressive,” Rouhani said,  adding that the use of sanctions in today’s world is a “reactionary method and its time has already passed.”

“The sanctions are not advantageous for the West either, which is facing economic problems. The (imposed) sanctions only benefit Israel, not other states,” said Rouhani.
He added the next government will follow two steps, “Firstly, Iran will display more transparency to tell the world what it is doing within the international regulations. And secondly, we will increase the confidence between Iran and the world.”

He added that the United States should “recognise Iran’ s nuclear rights” for the Islamic republic to enter negotiations with it.  The issue of “Iran’s relations with the United States is a complicated and difficult one,” said Rouhani, adding “anyway, we will not pursue escalating the tensions.”

“Any talk with the United States should be based on mutual respect and interest, as well as an equal footing,” said Rouhani.
Resumption of the negotiations with the United States must have “a number of conditions: the US officials should not interfere in Iran’s internal affairs; they should recognise all Iranian rights including the nuclear rights; and the United States should give up unilateral measures against Iran,” he added.

“Everybody had better know that the next Iranian government will never slacken on Iran’s inalienable rights,” he said, stressing “In case we notice any goodwill (from the United States), we will take confidence-building steps within the interests of our nation.”

Iran’s incoming president also said that foreign intervention should be stopped in Syria.
President-elect Rouhani said, “the Syrian people should solve their own problems,” and “other countries should co-operate for the peace to be restored “ in the Arab state.

“We are against terrorist acts in Syria; we are against civil war in Syria; we are opposing foreign intervention in the country, “ said Rouhani, who won Iran’s presidency by garnering 50.7 percent of the votes last Friday.

About the pressures on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign, Rouhani said “the current Syrian government should be accepted by the whole world as the legal government up to the next presidential election” in Syria.

Iran has been the main regional ally of Damascus as its officials have repeatedly stressed Iran’s support for a political solution to the Syrian crisis. — Xinhua.
