A Harare man who applied for a protection order against his wife turned out to be an irresponsible father who never paid school fees for his five children. Ronald Kuraya of Tafara on Friday brought his wife Veronica Kuchenga to the Harare Civil Court saying she had married another man and was becoming violent to him.
“She shouts at me in public accusing me of turning our children into street children. I went to Beitbridge, but was surprised to come back and found her married to another man. As if this is not enough she comes to my house harassing me,” he said.
In her counter response, Kuchenga told the court that she left her husband of 15 years because he never paid school fees for their children or bought them food.
“He left eight months ago, but he never sent money towards the upkeep of his children. I have had enough of this irresponsible man and decided to stay on my own,” she said.
She added that their first child was supposed to be in Form Two, but she has never been to school.
The court heard that the second child is in Mozambique while the only child going to school has his fees paid through Government’s Basic Education Assistance Module for the vulnerable.
“I am a hairdresser but I single-handedly look after the children.
“Since he came back, I never visited him but was shocked when my children ran away from me jeering and shouting that I am a prostitute,” she said.
Magistrate Ms Olivia Mariga granted the protection order in Kuraya’s favour.
