TODAY, on Africa Day, we gather beneath the vast skies of our ancestral lands to celebrate our being — our identity, our unity and our destiny. As we reflect on the spirit of our continent, we ask a seemingly simple question: Is Africa spelt with a C or a K? Yet this question is not about mere letters — it is a metaphor for our choices, our values, and the power that resides within each of us.
Let us consider the C. It stands for Culture, the vibrant tapestry of languages, traditions, and stories passed down through generations. It is for Community, the collective heartbeat that reminds us we are never alone — our strength emerges when we embrace the wisdom of our elders and the youthful dreams of our tomorrow. C is also for Courage, the bravery that compels us to challenge oppression and claim our rightful place in history. When we see the letter C in Africa, we see a continent that nurtures its roots, celebrates its art, and upholds its ancestral pride.
Now, turn your gaze to the K. This letter resonates with Kinship — the profound bonds that tie us together in a web that spans from the smallest family to the great nations of our continent. K embodies Knowledge, the seed of enlightenment that grows, unstoppable, when nurtured in the fertile soil of indigenous wisdom. And K is for Kinetic energy, the unstoppable force propelling us forward as we march to forge new paths of independence, innovation, and self-reliance. With K, we pronounce our destiny boldly and with conviction.

In truth, whether we embrace the C or the K is not a matter of orthography, but one of self-discovery. Each letter reminds us to look inward, to find that seed that God planted in us — just as the Good Book tells us, every tree was created to reproduce after its kind, ensuring a future where growth and renewal are the rights of every living thing.
Within each of us lies an untold potential waiting to burst forth into greatness — if only we nurture it with the water of unity, the sunlight of knowledge, and the rich earth of our shared heritage.
Our forefathers —voices like Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah — have taught us that true development begins from within. Nyerere declared, “A man is developing himself when he grows, or earns enough to provide decent conditions for himself and his family.”
This is not a development imposed from without, but one that blooms from the seed of clear self-identity and the robust cultural soil of our values. And as Nkrumah reminded us, “The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa,” steering our collective gaze away from the distractions of external expectations and towards the vibrant promise of our own future.
Today, we stand together with the voice of Modibo Keïta — who passionately urged, “African unity is the foundation of true independence.” He believed, and we too hold fast to this truth, that our destiny is interwoven with the destiny of every nation across Africa; that in the spirit of “I am because we are,” our individual strength is bound to the strength of our people. It is the unity of kinship, whether expressed as C or K, that nourishes the seed within and fosters an environment where every tree of our continent can rise tall and mighty.

Let us then choose to define Africa by what matters most: not by the external labels that may be imposed upon us, but by the intrinsic dignity of a people committed to self-governance, self-reliance, and self-respect. As Modibo Keïta, the founding father and first President of Mali so wisely affirmed, “The dignity of a nation is measured by its ability to govern itself.”
In our governance, in our cultural expression, and in our relentless nurturing of the seed of greatness within, Africa transcends the boundaries of letters and definitions. Africa is a vibrant, living testament to the power of our unity, our history, and our indomitable spirit.
Today, let the C and the K remind us that regardless of how we spell our name, our essence remains unaltered — a flourishing garden of hope, determination and shared destiny. Let us nurture our seed until it blossoms into a mighty tree under whose shade we find freedom, prosperity and dignity.
Together we can.
