FOR many years, the traditional practice in primary schools has been for one teacher to teach all subjects to a Grade 6 or Grade 7 class.
This model has produced many successful learners and remains practical for thousands of schools, particularly those with limited staffing. However, as education continues to evolve and the curriculum becomes increasingly demanding, there is growing evidence that subject specialisation at upper primary level can significantly improve the quality of teaching and ultimately, learners’ academic performance.
The proposal is simple.
Instead of one teacher teaching English, Mathematics and Science to one class, schools can identify teachers who have strengths and expertise in each of these subjects. One teacher would specialise in Mathematics, another in English and another in Science, with each teaching all Grade 6 and Grade 7 classes in their area of expertise.
While this model may not be suitable for every school, those with adequate staffing should seriously consider adopting it.
One of the greatest advantages of subject specialisation is improved mastery of content. Mathematics, English and Science are the foundation subjects upon which learners build future academic success. Each requires specialised knowledge, effective teaching strategies and continuous professional development.
A teacher who focuses on one subject is more likely to deepen their understanding of the curriculum, stay updated with new teaching methods and confidently address learners’ misconceptions. This level of expertise is often difficult to achieve when one teacher is expected to prepare for and teach every subject.
Specialisation also enhances lesson quality. A Mathematics specialist has more time to develop engaging activities, analyse learner errors, prepare meaningful assessments and introduce practical approaches that make abstract concepts easier to understand.
An English specialist can concentrate on improving literacy, reading comprehension, grammar, creative writing and oral communication. Likewise, a Science specialist can design investigations, demonstrations and experiments that stimulate learners’ curiosity and encourage scientific thinking. The result is richer, more engaging learning experiences.
Another important benefit is improved learner performance. Experience from many schools shows that when learners are taught by teachers who are passionate and knowledgeable about specific subjects, examination results tend to improve. Teachers become more confident, lessons become more focused and learners receive better academic support.
Since English, Mathematics and Science are often considered gateway subjects for secondary education and future careers, strengthening instruction in these areas can have long-term benefits.
Subject specialisation also promotes professional growth among teachers.
Instead of spreading their effort across numerous subjects, teachers become experts in one or two disciplines. They attend targeted workshops, participate in subject panels, share best practices with colleagues and continuously refine their instructional skills. Over time, schools develop strong subject departments capable of mentoring younger teachers and sustaining high standards.
Planning and assessment also become more effective. Specialist teachers are better positioned to analyse examination data, identify common learning gaps and implement focused intervention programmes.
Remedial lessons, enrichment activities and continuous assessments become more meaningful because they are informed by a deeper understanding of learner needs. Schools are therefore able to make evidence-based decisions that improve achievement.
There are additional benefits beyond academic performance. Learners are exposed to different teaching styles, personalities and instructional approaches. This prepares them for secondary school, where they will interact with several subject teachers each day.
It also reduces overdependence on a single classroom teacher and encourages adaptability, responsibility and confidence among learners.
However, it is important to recognise that subject specialisation is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Many schools, particularly those in rural areas or with limited staffing, may not have enough teachers to implement this approach. Small schools often require teachers to handle multiple subjects because of resource constraints. In such cases, the traditional class-teacher model remains practical and should continue to be supported through ongoing teacher development.
Similarly, schools should avoid introducing specialisation without proper planning. Timetables, teacher workloads, classroom movement and resource allocation must be carefully organised. Teachers should be assigned subjects based on qualifications, competence, experience and passion rather than convenience alone. School leaders should also monitor implementation to ensure that the new arrangement genuinely benefits learners.
It is equally important to remember that specialisation should not diminish the role of the class teacher. Learners still require pastoral care, guidance, emotional support and close monitoring of their overall development. Schools should therefore strike a balance between academic specialisation and holistic learner welfare.
Education is constantly changing and schools must be willing to embrace innovations that improve learning outcomes. Subject specialisation at Grade 6 and Grade 7 represents one such innovation. Where staffing levels, school size and available resources make it possible, this model has the potential to raise standards in English, Mathematics and Science, strengthen teacher professionalism and improve examination performance.
The future of education lies in making informed decisions based on the needs of learners rather than simply preserving tradition. While the conventional approach has served schools well for many years, there is value in exploring new models that better prepare learners for an increasingly competitive world. Schools that are in a position to implement subject specialisation should consider taking this progressive step, while those that cannot should continue strengthening the quality of teaching within the existing system.
Ultimately, the goal is not merely to change who teaches Grade 6 and Grade 7, but to ensure that every learner receives the highest quality education possible. If subject specialisation helps achieve that goal, then it is a conversation worth having in every primary school.
