Island of beauty on Chitepo Avenue

ON Herbert Chitepo Avenue in Harare is the Island Hotel.

This two-star accommodation facility was aesthetically designed to lure visitors. The 73-room hotel was opened in 2015.

The managing director has a passion for flowers; thus, she inspired the addition of a number of plants to beautify the place.

From the outside, you will notice an island of beauty, where large king palms are the centre of attraction in the midst of the red poinsettia (euphorbia pulcherrima) and a variety of the spring flowering petunias.

The pruned Msasa tree (Brachystegia spiciformis) is another relic at the entrance, which brings us to the subject of conservation in the green-up campaign.

Whenever a garden is being designed or built, it is always a good idea to preserve the existing trees or vegetation, especially if they are indigenous.

Native trees have an advantage in that they preserve the existing ecosystem. They share an affinity with any flora and fauna in the area, thus they play a conservation role.

Indigenous plants avoid the now-rampant problem of invasive species, which has become a big challenge wherever there are human settlements.

Invasive species are exotic plants that were introduced in an area with seemingly good intentions but then become problematic weeds. The water hyacinth in Lake Chivero is a good example. Some invasive species like the eucalyptus tree have a tendency of depleting water table levels.

Also, indigenous trees help to support healthy insect populations of the beneficial type. Exotic plants can introduce harmful species, which can cause losses in agriculture. At the same time, they can bring about the extinction of the good species.

In landscaping, indigenous plants require less maintenance, compared to exotics, which may require more fertiliser and chemical sprays to sustain their growth.

A number of pots are scattered around the yard, offering a good atmosphere and breaking the concrete monotony.

Rockeries are another excellent feature incorporated here. They give variety, colour and beauty to a garden. Thus, when designing a garden, it is always a pleasant addition to an otherwise dull surrounding.

Variety is the spice of life. Try to incorporate a number of features in a garden. They include bird baths, pergolas, arches, playground area, benches and hanging baskets.

Relaxing areas are a welcome addition.

The swimming pool adds glamour to the hotel.
