It wasn’t me, sings Eric Mudzingwa

“IT wasn’t me” a catchy reggae track by Jamaican-American musician Shaggy is probably a musical tune that ex-Highlanders Football Club captain Eric ‘Tsiba’ Mudzingwa now has in his playlist and he will perhaps put it on repeat for long!

This was after he was cleared by the police following allegations that he stole a cellphone.

Mudzingwa was last week detained for the alleged crime. Social media went on an overdrive suggesting that Mudzingwa and his former Bosso teammate Denzil Khumalo had been arrested on allegations of cell phone theft in Mpopoma, Bulawayo.

A purported police statement, which did rounds on social media confirmed the arrest of Mudzingwa while stating Khumalo was on the run. Though Mudzingwa spent the night in the cells, he was eventually released the next day after Khumalo  reportedly showed up at the station with the “alleged” stolen phone in hand.

“Sadly, l got involved in a matter which tarnishes my image yet l was not involved in the disappearing of the phone. The person who reported the case is Khumalo’s friend. I don’t know how the phone disappeared, but it was reported that it was me who took it. It’s still a shock to me.

However, l would like to apologise to everyone who got affected by the news because l received calls from all over, with people inquiring what had happened. I also want to thank former Highlanders players and teammates who immediately took it upon themselves to visit the station, to help me out of the unfortunate situation,” said Mudzingwa.

Mudzingwa was recruited into the Highlanders juniors in 2000, by the then juniors coach Reuben Tsengwa. In 2005, he was part of the Tsengwa-coached Bosso Under-19 team, which played in the Zifa Southern Region Division One before being promoted to the senior team in 2007, by then coach Methembe “Mayor” Ndlovu.

He was part of the Bosso squad that ended the particular season as runners-up to league champions Dynamos. During his Bosso days, Mudzingwa was deployed at centre back, right back, left back and anchor-man.
