Ithemba wheels mobilises people with disabilities

A 40-year-old Bulawayo man is making a difference in his community through “Ithemba Wheel’, an initiative that focuses on the distribution and donation of wheelchairs to people with disabilities.

Mr Marvelous Mbulo, who was born with Muscular Dystrophy, which refers to a group of more than 30 genetic conditions that cause muscle weakness and other muscle-related symptoms, says he felt a greater need to help people with disabilities as he is no stranger to the struggles of those living with that condition.

The initiative is inspired by Zimbabwean musician, Greatman, who is also living with disabilities and is actively involved in the donation of wheelchairs across the country.

Mr Mbulo said this has pushed him to be more of an advocate for people with  disabilities.

“I looked at how huge Zimbabwe is and took it upon myself to follow what Greatman is doing, I then  looked  for donors and now I am happily  distributing wheelchairs  to those that need them in Matabeleland,” he said.

“My aim is to also teach people about different types of disabilities. For example, if I give a wheelchair to a person who has Cerebral palsy, I then explain to them their condition and how best to take care of themselves.”

Mr Mbulo was part of the group “Inkonjane” before joining the renowned “Liyana” band, formed at King George VI Centre. The band once toured Europe and America and featured in the Oscar-winning documentary “Music by Prudence”.
