Jacques returns for another show

HARARE. — The Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open begins today at Royal Harare Golf Club and one of the hottest players lined up for the R1,8 million tournament is last year’s runner up Jacques Blaauw. The 29-year-old managed a final round of 68 last year to finish one stroke behind eventual winner Jbe’ Kruger, who returns to Harare to defend his title.

Blaauw has won three times on the Sunshine Tour and, after a successful summer that included four top-15s, he will look to Harare for his first victory of 2015.

His share of seventh at the Joburg Open in February was impressive, but a month later at the Tshwane Open he really stood out. A final round of 61 matched the course record at Pretoria Country Club and earned the Centurion local sole second behind George Coetzee.

“It was a great experience and it meant a lot for my game,” said Blaauw. “My confidence is up and I’m very chuffed with what I achieved. I’ve just got to peg it up and play well.”

The world number 189 is lined up for a big result and his fond memories of the Golden Pilsener Zimbabwe Open will play an important role in helping him contend for the title.

Blaauw has made a big step up with his top results at the start of the 2015 season and it seems that his turn to win is very close.

“Everything went the way I planned for it to this year,” he said. “You’ve got to stay in the moment and not get ahead of yourself. It’s always positive to be in contention at good events and I really find it fun. Hopefully this week I can do the same.”— Sunshine Tour.
