James Mpofu, better known by his stage name James Eland, is quickly becoming a name to watch in the hip-hop scene. With his vibrant voice and unique style, the young artiste has set his eyes on making waves not just locally but on the international stage as well.

Working under the Atlanta-based JLawson Music Group, Eland’s journey in music has been marked by dedication and an unwavering passion for the craft.

He ventured into the music industry in 2010, drawing inspiration from music legends such as Tracy Chapman, Don Williams, and Winky D. “I started off back in 2010 under a then-known international Youth Music Exchange (YME) from New York, led by Dr Michael Bitz. I formed a digital band called The Meteorytz, and we released an album under the YME project until it closed down in 2013,” Eland shared.

After the closure of YME, Eland pursued a solo career in 2017, releasing his hit single “Drinks Poppin'” under his own label, Music Yard Community Entertainment. This track marked the beginning of his journey as a solo artiste, followed by several other songs distributed by JLawson Music Group.
“My main influences include musicians like Tracy Chapman, Don Williams, Brian Adams, Femi Kuti, the late Oliver Mtukudzi, Winky D, Rick Ross, and the late Riky Rick, among others,” Eland said.

His talent has led to numerous collaborations with international artistes.
“One of my most outstanding collaborations was with Phalando Lawson, known as Mr Flamboyant, the CEO of JLawson Music Group in Atlanta. We worked together on a legendary song called ‘Make Money’, which was my first record under the deal I signed for distribution.
“I’ve also collaborated with local artist R Peels on a remix of the song ‘Like Hey’ and I have an upcoming international collaboration with American artiste Kimberley Crawford, known as Boss Azz.”

The musician has primarily performed at private parties, specialising in party rap.
“I’ve done performances at private home parties, but I’m currently transitioning to bigger audience platforms like gigs and shows. More is to be expected as I push forward with my personal record label, Eland Print Nation.”

Like many artistes, Eland has faced challenges throughout his career. “The main challenge has been securing adequate funding. The money that comes through is often not enough, and in this industry, financial resources are crucial for brand expansion.
“Another major challenge is finding a good deal, whether for distribution or recording contracts. Additionally, getting gigs that offer proper recognition and decent pay has been tough.
“The Covid-19 lockdowns in 2020 brought everything to a halt, with performance restrictions and funding issues pausing my career for almost two years. Finding good management was also a struggle before I connected with JLawson Music Group. Breaking through in this industry is not easy.”

Despite these challenges, Eland has enjoyed significant success.
“One of my highest points was topping radio and online charts in the US, even becoming Artist of the Week on a station in Valdosta, GA. I’ve also received considerable airplay locally, for which I’m deeply appreciative.”

However, his career hit a low when his contract with JLawson expired in January 2023, leading to a year-long hiatus as he figured out his next steps.
“It was a difficult period, but I’m now looking forward to the future.”

Though not mentoring anyone, Eland has been advising fellow Bulawayo artiste Fury Gun, known for the hit “Awukhuzeki”.
“Fury Gun is a talented artiste, and I’ve enjoyed sharing my experiences with him as someone who’s been in this business for over a decade.”

Looking ahead, Eland expressed his desire to collaborate with more artistes across borders.
“I’d love to work with T.I, Trey Songz, Cassper Nyovest, and others. As an upcoming musician, I need to learn from the best,” he said.
