Twenty-year-old University of Zimbabwe law student Tafadzwa Jaricha was on Saturday crowned Miss Universities at a well-attended event held at Ochi City in the capital. Jaricha bagged the top prize after she shrugged off stiff competition from other 22 beautiful girls from different universities in the country including Africa University, Women’s University, Bindura University, Chinhoyi University and Great Zimbabwe University among other universities.
Yolanda Dadirai Manhenga of Midlands State University and Fadzai Mubata from Great Zimbabwe University were crowned first and second princess respectively while the Miss Personality crown was taken by Women’s University in Africa student Olivia Samwanda and Angolan Africa University student Josefa da Rista was crowned Miss Talent.
The queen Tafadzwa received a car, holiday at Hala lodges and other prizes courtesy of Guardian Security, Kenako Music, Sela Fuel, Hala Lodges and Helen Cakes among other sponsors.
In an interview after being crowned the queen Jaricha said she felt honoured and promised to work on reducing the high rate of domestic violence. “I am so excited you know when you come for a competition, you expect the best and now that I am a public icon everything I would say will be influential so I have passion to reduce cases of domestic violence,
“The society today is experiencing a high rate of domestic violence. My dream is to reduce the rate of domestic violence by emancipating the society through the awareness campaign, supporting the anti-violence campaign” she said.
The beauty pageant was last hold in 2013 and failed to bounce last year resulting in the Miss Universities 2013 queen Valerie Gugulethu Chingonzo reigning for two consecutive years. In an interview one of the event organisers Catherine Chirara said there was need to re-strategising the pageant that resulted in the organisation failing to run it last year.
“We wanted to re-strategise and rebrand but from now on we are promising a smooth flowing of the pageant in future,” she said. Urban grooves artist Rockford Josphats aka Roki put up a sterling performance at the event.
