JCI Zimbabwe establishes foundation

Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce president Mr Oswell Binha, who launched the foundation, implored corporates and individuals to assist in developing the nation’s corporate and community leaders.
“Contributing to this fund gives one the opportunity to actively support the programmes of JCI Zimbabwe, and in so doing, repay the organisation for the wonderful work it is doing to develop our communities.
“Participation in the foundation brings deep personal satisfaction that comes from the knowledge that you have done your part to better our world,” said Mr Binha.
The ZNCC president is also part of the board of trustees of the foundation.
The foundation is expected to develop the next generation of active citizens and corporate and community leaders.
JCI Zimbabwe 2011 president Mr Patson Mahatchi said the foundation was created to provide an opportunity for every corporate organisation and individuals who share with JCI its desire to create better communities.
Speaking at the launch, inaugural foundation chairman and JCI senator, Engineer Quinton Kanhukamwe, who is also the vice chancellor of the Harare Institute of Technology said the immediate priority of the foundation would be to establish and maintain the JCI Zimbabwe secretariat.
He emphasised the important role the foundation would play in raising funds to train and develop its members and officers.
Mr Kanhukamwe used examples of his personal experience in JCI saying it helped him to run the Faculty of Industrial Technology as well as establishing Technopak at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo.
JCI is a worldwide organisation of young active citizens, which seeks to create positive change in local communities.
Its members engage in voluntary activities to address community challenges, through projects that display active citizenship.
It has working agreements with the International Chamber of Commerce, the United Nations where it has General Consultative status, UNICEF, the UN Global Compact, AISEC, UNESCO, Junior Achievement, the Flanders District of Creativity and the Hans Seidel Foundation.
The group has been involved in setting up a Children’s Traffic Play Centre in Harare, construction of classroom blocks in Bulawayo and recognising outstanding young persons under the JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Zimbabwe programme.
Recently, JCI Zimbabwe signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NetOne to implement an anti-malaria programme named the JCI Nothing-But-Nets project.
