Jeys Marabini, the father Tiae found through music

WHEN people talk about fatherhood, they often think of biological ties. But sometimes, the strongest father-son relationships are built through mentorship, guidance and a shared passion.

As the world marks Father’s Day today, the bond between Afro-jazz legend Jeys Marabini and Afro-pop musician Tiambiwi “Tiae” Shoko stands out as an example of how a mentor can change a young person’s life.

For more than a decade, Tiae has worked closely with Marabini, one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated musicians and cultural ambassadors. What began as a musical opportunity eventually blossomed into a father-and-son relationship built on mentorship, trust and shared experiences.

The journey began when Marabini spotted potential in the young singer and invited him to join his renowned Kozekulunge Band. At just 17 years old, Tiae found himself learning from one of the country’s finest musicians.

The opportunity came at a crucial time in Tiae’s life, having lost his biological father at a young age. Over the years, Marabini filled that void, becoming not only a mentor but also a father figure whose guidance extended far beyond music. Today, Tiae is a father himself. Married and blessed with two young daughters whom he adores, he says fatherhood has given his life renewed purpose and perspective.

“Having children who say Happy Father’s Day to me gives me a purpose in life. I have two beautiful daughters and they are the people I live for. They have shown me what it means to be a father and a provider,” said Tiae.

Over the years, Tiae and Marabini have travelled extensively, performing before audiences both locally and internationally, strengthening a bond that has endured through music, life lessons and mutual respect.

Marabini said watching Tiae grow into a respected musician has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.

“Tiae is my son because we’ve come a long way together. He joined my band at the age of 17, bringing with him raw talent, passion and a hunger to grow. Along the way, he also became part of Impumelelo Shining Stars, now known as Indosakusa: The Shining Star, which further shaped his musical journey and experience.

“To this day, my journey continues with him on board, and it has been amazing to witness his growth into one of the finest backing vocalists in the team. His versatility, especially in alto and tenor, adds a unique richness and depth to our sound that truly sets him apart,” Marabini said.

One of the most important lessons Marabini passed on to Tiae was learning to play the guitar, a skill that would later help him launch his own solo career.

“I’m grateful for the path he’s walking because he remains respectful, values guidance and is always willing to learn.

He’s destined for greatness,” said Marabini.

Tiae has learnt far more than music. Joining Kozekulunge opened doors that changed the course of his life.

“When I look back on my journey, I remain deeply grateful to Jeys Marabini for believing in me and giving me a platform when I was still finding my voice as an artiste. Being part of his band taught me discipline, professionalism and the true meaning of Afro-Jazz.

“Jeys is not only one of Zimbabwe’s most respected musicians, he’s also a mentor who has invested years in nurturing young talent through his music academy and mentorship programmes.

“Every opportunity he gave me became a stepping stone towards the musician I am today, and for that, I’ll always be thankful,” said Tiae.

As the world commemorates Father’s Day, Tiae says there is no better person to honour than the man who helped shape his career and outlook on life.

“As we celebrate Father’s Day, I see Jeys as more than a musical mentor. He has been a father figure whose guidance extends beyond the stage. Our relationship is built on respect, trust and a shared passion for preserving our culture through music.

“Like a father teaching his son to walk, he patiently showed me the ropes of the industry and encouraged me to believe in my gift. The values he instilled in me continue to shape my career and I’m honoured to carry forward lessons from a man whose legacy has inspired generations of musicians,” said Tiae.
