Jibilika Dance Trust will tomorrow host its monthly dance contest at the Book Café. The contest will also see solo dancers battling for the crown. Jibilika solo dance championships were supposed to be held on October 4 at the Jibilika national finals recently but were disturbed by the rains that fell on the day of the contest.
In an interview with this publication, Jibilika founder Plot Mhako said they have to hold the solo dance finals on the day of their monthly cipher so as to give a chance to solo dancers who failed to take part on the Jibilika dance finals.
“This cypher will also host the Jibilika Solo Dance Championships which had to be skipped due to an rain at the recently held finals. The individual dancing competition will see dancers in various categories such as break dance, krump, new school hip hop and dancehall competing for honours,” he said.
Meanwhile, the cipher event is running under the theme “Empowering Adolescene Girls” in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child.
The cypher sessions are part of the on going Step Up 2 HIV programme which raises awareness on the deadly virus to youths in schools and communities through popular culture.
“It was set to recognize the need to afford girls equal opportunities in all sectors and also give them a voice as a major step towards fighting gender-based prejudices that can propel the spread of HIV,” he said.
Each month young urban artists such as dancers, beat boxers and rappers come together to showcase their talent and engage positively on the need for awareness in the fight on HIV.
The monthly series started two months ago and have attracted a huge following from urban artists and enthusiasts. The Jibilika Step Up 2 HIV cyphers are set to begin this November in four other Zimbabwean towns namely Gweru, Mutare, Bulawayo and Masvingo.
