PREPARATIONS for this year’s Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo commemorations are at an advanced stage with a 4KM walk scheduled for July 1 in Bulawayo to mark the 15th anniversary of Father Zimbabwe’s death. The walk: “General Josh 4KM Walk to Healing” will kick off at the Renkini bus terminus, passing through the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo statue in the city centre and ending at Stanley Square in Makokoba. The Army Band, arts and cultural groups as well as drum majorettes will be part of he march.

The main celebrations will be held at Stanley Square under the theme: “Healing the Nation”.
Speaking at Blue Lagoon shopping complex yesterday, the late Vice President Nkomo’s son Sibangilizwe, urged people to attend the march in their numbers to honour Father Zimbabwe.

“Dr Nkomo distinguished himself by his firm belief in peace, even at the height of personal provocation and persecution,” he said.
“The theme resonates with the character of my father and his abiding philosophy that builds and fosters national cohesion and harmony.”

Sibangilizwe said the Dr Nkomo fundraising dinner and birthday celebrations, which were held in the city recently, were very successful.
A total of $16,300 was raised to document Father Zimbabwe’s life and rehabilitate the Joshua Nkomo Museum in Matsheumhlophe suburb.

Several projects have been undertaken in honour of the late veteran nationalist and hero such as the renaming of the Bulawayo Airport to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic in Gwanda, the erection of Nkomo statue at the Intersection of Main Street and the changing of Main Street to Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street.
