Chronicle Business Editor Mernat Mafirakurewa, who died in a car accident on Wednesday night near Beatrice, was buried at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare yesterday.
Mafirakurewa (33) was travelling from Bulawayo to Harare to cover the National Tourism Policy launch when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with a South Africa-bound bus.
Chronicle Managing Editor Isaac Waniwa said the journalism fraternity will be poorer without Mafirakurewa.
“As Zimpapers, we have lost a cadre who was dependable, reliable and hardworking; our fraternity will be poorer without him.
“He was very humble despite him being abreast with various issues, from sport, politics, business, you name it,” he said.
A close friend and fellow journalist, Owen Gagare, said Mafirakurewa was an exemplary journalist and family man.
He challenged Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Engineer Walter Mzembi to fulfill his promise of mobilising resources to complete the construction of Mafirakurewa’s house.
“Go well Cde, you fought a good fight, we will forever be grateful for the contribution you made to the journalism fraternity and the country at large,” he said.
Family spokesperson Mr Lloyd Mugwira paid tribute to Zimbabwe Newspapers for supporting the grieving family.
Mafirakurewa is survived by wife Samu and three children.
