Journalists urged to learn sign language

JOURNALISTS have been urged to learn the use of sign language so that they are able to report factually on matters involving people with hearing impairment. Addressing reporters and officials from the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) during a Victim Friendly Meeting at the Gweru court last week, Chipo Zano, the team leader of Access to Justice for people with disabilities in the Midlands province, said it was vital that members of the media learn sign language for easy communication with deaf and dumb people.

She said it was the norm that when a deaf and dumb person is abused, members of the media would look for that person’s relative to assist in the communication.

“I urge you members of the media and everyone to learn sign language for easy communication. You can only get the real story if you can communicate directly with the deaf and dumb person,” Zano said.

She urged members of the media to visit places like Jairos Jiri Centre in Ascot so that they will interact with the disabled.

“We hold many events at Jairos Jiri which need media coverage but because our media don’t understand sign language it’s difficult for them to cover these events,” said Zano.

The meeting was organised by the VFC Chairperson and Midlands Regional magistrate Morgan Nemadire, who concurred with Zano.

“Learning the use of sign language is vital for easy flow of information. Sign language is a tool that can be mastered by members of the media for easy communication with those who can’t hear or talk,” he said.
