First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, through her Angel of Hope Foundation, yesterday rescued seven families in Shurugwi North Constituency that have been sleeping in the open after their homes were burnt in a suspected case of arson early this month, when she donated roofing materials and bricks.
The First Lady also donated three blankets to each family, food hampers and maize meal to the affected families. Dr Mnangagwa, who is well-known for her far-reaching philanthropic works, also took advantage of the event to donate food hampers to 100 elderly women and men from the surrounding community.
The beneficiaries thanked the First Lady for extending a hand and remembering them during their time of need. “You know it’s very humbling to be remembered by the First Lady of a nation during difficult times like these after we lost all our belongings and homes after some arsonists set our houses on fire.
“I thought the First Lady was busy with national issues at national level, but it’s very humbling to know that she also remembers us here at the village level,” says Ms Ruth Chapfudza.

Mr Rabson Nera said he had been staying in the open after his two huts were gutted by fire, which is still under police investigation.
“We now have the First Lady to our rescue. I would like to thank her for her kindness,” he said.
Another victim, Mrs Eva Chitata, said she lost all her belongings and food in the arson incident.
“All my harvest was in the hut which was burnt, I could not retrieve anything but I can only be thankful to our mother, the First Lady, for providing us a lifeline today.
“Above all, I thank God that I am still alive because I could have died in the fire because the hut which was set on fire is where I was sleeping,” she said.

Gogo Mildred Mhute, who was part of the 100 elderly people to receive food hampers, said she was happy that the First Lady had remembered them too.
“She is the mother of the nation; we thank her for remembering us. We will stand by her husband, the President when we go and vote because in them, we have leaders who remember the elderly,” she said.
Zanu PF National Assembly candidate for Shurugwi North, Cde Joseph Mupasi, who handed over the donations, also thanked the First Lady for her kind gesture.
“When the constituency faces such a challenge, it becomes a community problem. Now that Amai has come on board, we feel the much-needed relief.
“She has come to our rescue and we have also seen the elderly smiling,” he said.
