SIMBARASHE Mashayi, Zimbabwe’s head coach for the judo team, is optimistic his camp will bag at least 10 medals at the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games. Mashayi is also Zimbabwe’s national judo selector for the senior men’s team. “I’m a black belt third don athlete, competing at a senior level for our national team. I believe my team will complement everything that I’ve taught them as a coach and I’m expecting more than 10 medals according to our athletes’ representation here.” said Mashayi.
Zimbabwe brought in 14 athletes drawn from various learning institutions in the country and according to Mashayi they will definitely not disappoint at the ongoing games in Bulawayo.
“We’ve got quite a number of judo athletes that we’re looking out for. There’re more than eight or 10 good athletes in my team and we’re looking for more than 10 medals in this competition,” said Mashayi.
Zimbabwe judo team manager, Miriam Moyo was also confident of a good show from the team.
“Since we came here our athletes were training every day and they’re well prepared. We’ve some chances especially with the boys side.
“We’ve the likes of George Chande who has participated in Zambia and the exposure was good for him. For this competition, it’s a first to bring the girls team. It’s also remarkable because they’ll gain experience and the exposure we need as a team,” said Moyo.
Judo competition begins today at the ZITF Hall 5.
