Jumbos wreak havoc in Mhangura

Conrad Mupesa Herald Correspondent
Farmers in Mhangura are living in fear of elephants from Chenanga Game Park that are destroying their crops.
Chenanga is more than 50km north of Mhangura Town.

The farmers claim that hundreds of hectares were under threat from the elephants in areas that include Binje, Chipiri, Chitatu, Jechenene and Nivanna, among other surrounding areas.

The farmers are now concerned that they may fail to get any meaningful yields if the issue is not addressed urgently.
“We have had challenges with the elephants since we started staying in this area,” said Grimmer Mutsau from Jechenene Village.

Another farmer said elephants from the game park mainly target their maize crop.
Efforts to get a comment from Mashonaland West provincial Agritex officer Edna Shambare were futile by the time of going to print, while local Agritex officers confirmed the reports, but could not divulge more information.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo professed ignorance over the matter, but promised that he would get information from the game park before he could comment. However, sources accused some of the farmers of being responsible for the problem as they were pulling down the security fence surrounding the game park.
