Junior doctors return to work

The doctors wanted their on-call allowances raised from 33 US cents per hour to US$10.
A visit to the hospital yesterday showed that all the doctors were working and there was no sign of a go slow as previously threatened.

There were reasonable queues at the out-patients department and dressing, with those in the queue saying the doctors were attending to them quickly.
“I was here by 7:30 in the morning and I cannot complain about the doctor’s speed in attending to patients,” said Mrs Nomsa Tirivaviri of Budiriro.

Mrs Tirivaviri said she had come to have a plaster on her leg removed and was attended to by midday.
The hospital’s acting chief executive officer Mr George Vera said all 55 junior doctors were at their workstations.
“We had a meeting with them on Wednesday in which we advised them that they can continue airing their grievances while working,” said Mr Vera.
“I am happy that they have taken heed of our call and they are all back at work.
“The hospital will try to assist them in solving some of their grievances where it can. We are trying our best to help them. It is good that we have this rapport and we keep these lines of communication open.”

Mr Vera said they were looking for affordable accommodation to rent for junior doctors in suburbs surrounding the hospital.
Junior doctors protested that nurses and laboratory scientists were getting on-call allowances of up to US$8 per hour while they were getting just 33 USc.
However, nurses get donor support while junior doctors rely solely on Government coffers.-The Herald
