Junior tennis tourney kicks off

and St George’s College.
Participants will take part in the Under-12, Under-14 and the combined Under-16 and Under-18 age group.
Tournament director Linsent Chitiyo said the tournament would be used for the selection of players to represent the Harare province in upcoming events, including the Dunlop tournament in Mutare in August.
“We have combined the Under-16 and Under-18 age groups in preparation of the Dunlop inter-provincial tournament. The tournament has to cater for our selection for the other provincial tournaments we have,” said Chitiyo.
Chitiyo said the event used to run as a trial competition, however, they have changed it into a tournament to create a competitive edge.
“Apparently for the past years the competition was run as the Harare selection trials. Our main goal is to have the Harare Open as an annual tournament.
“This will bring players in Harare together and showcase their talent in a more organised competition. This is the first year we are going to have the Harare Junior Closed,” said Chitiyo.
The tournament director said they have had month end tournaments but some of the players were failing to participate in the competitions, as they would be competing in other disciplines in their schools.
“We have had month-end tournaments but some of the players will be doing other sporting disciplines and as you can see there will not be much activities happening in the schools,”said Chitiyo.
