Zimbabwe’s second largest inland dam, Lake Mutirikwi is almost spilling for the first time in more than a decade with the reservoir now 92.37 percent full as of this morning.
Chances are high the dam will spill in the coming few days if heavy rains persist in its catchment area.
Spilling of the water body, built in 1960, will be a massive boon for irrigation in the Lowveld cane fields.
The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) spokesperson Ms Marjorie Munyonga confirmed Lake Mutirikwi was 92.37 percent following readings done today at 7am.
Lake Mutirikwi is also Masvingo City’s sole source of water and is second in size only to Tugwi-Mukosi Dam amongst the country’s interior water bodies.
