Justice Chinhengo dies

Former High Court Judge Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo has died.

The retired judge died in Masvingo today.

He was 69.

In a statement, the Judicial Service Commission confirmed Justice Chinhengo’s death.

“The Chief Justice of Zimbabwe and Chairperson of the JSC, Honourable Justice Luke Malaba, Judicial Service Commissioners, the Judge President of the High Court, judges and magistrates, the secretary of JSC and members of the Judicial Service would like to express their deepest condolences to the Chinhengo family on the death of former High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Moses Hungwe Chinhengo, in Masvingo today,” said JSC.

Justice Chinhengo joined the High Court bench of Zimbabwe in February 1996 and served until 2004.

He later served as a High Court judge in Botswana and an acting Judge of Appeal in Lesotho.

He was subsequently appointed Acting Judge of the High Court of Namibia.

The late High Court Judge studied law at the University of Zimbabwe and graduated in 1978.

At independence, he was appointed undersecretary at the Ministry of Justice and Foreign Affairs and served until 1982.

In 1983 he was appointed head of the Department of Parliamentary Affairs as well as the Justice Department.

Before his appointment as judge of the High Court, Justice Chinhengo also practised as a legal officer in the Ministry of Justice and also worked as a legal practitioner and corporate executive.

Mourners are gathered at Chinhengo Farm in the Nyaningwe area of Masvingo.

Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
