aspiring Zifa presidential candidate Trevor Carelse-Juul is leading a Herald online readers’ poll with 51 percent of the readers believing that he is the best candidate for the post. Carelse-Juul is battling it out for the most powerful post in Zimbabwe football with Harare businessman Philip Chiyangwa, former Warrior James Takavada and former Dynamos secretary-general Leslie Gwindi.
And The Herald online platform has posed a question, “Who do you think can change the fortunes of Zimbabwe’s Soccer?” with the readers giving their feedback by instantly voting online. By lunch-time yesterday, Carelse-Juul was leading the poll with 205 votes, constituting 51 percent, followed by Chiyangwa who had 81 votes, amounting to 21 percent.
Carelse-Juul led a similar poll last year but was then beaten by Cuthbert Dube in the battle for the ZIFA presidency. Gwindi was third with 64 votes amounting to 16 percent while the former Lancashire Steel defender Takavada had 47 votes, constituting 12 percent.
However, the results remain an opinion by the readers of the leading daily newspaper. The onus would be on 58 ZIFA councillors who constitute the electoral college and have the mandate to choose Dube’s successor. Carelse-Juul, who has since unveiled his 10-point plan, arrived in the country at the weekend to set his campaign into motion.
He is expected to launch his manifesto tomorrow in Bulawayo which remains his home town. On Sunday, he was among the guests who watched the Highlanders/Tsholotsho match at Barbourfields which was broadcast live on SuperSport. “What I have built today, I built from scratch. I won a scholarship to go to University in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
“I joined the struggle at the age of 17 in Botswana and went to a camp in Zambia and joined ZAPU. “I worked closely with the late Vice Presidents Joshua Nkomo and Joseph Msika. I played football in Bulawayo for Mashonaland United (later named Zimbabwe Saints) and Bulawayo Wanderers.
“I have been in the architecture development business with SBT Juul Africa for 30 years and during this period we have developed over 350 projects which have touched the lives of millions in 15 African countries and the United Kingdom,” said Carelse-Juul.
