A Chakari juvenile was killed and his sibling was injured after being struck by lightning while they played in the rain.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the incident, which occurred in the gold mining settlement of Chakari in Mashonaland West province.

“Two juveniles aged 11 and 9 from the same family were struck by lightning at Grantley mine compound, Chakari, while playing outside when it was raining,” he said.

The nine-year-old victim, he said, later regained consciousness and sought help from parents.

A police report was made at ZRP Chakari.

The body of the juvenile was taken to Kadoma General Hospital mortuary.

Insp Kohwera urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimise lightning strikes during the rainy season.

“The public is advised to take precautionary measures during this rainfall season to avoid loss of life due to lightning or drowning.”
