The cash-strapped Kadoma City Council is seeking permission to borrow about $5,5 million to improve service delivery.
A resolution to that effect was made in a full council meeting last week. In an interview, Kadoma mayor councillor Muchineripi Chinyanganya said they had resolved to apply for borrowing powers from Government to urgently tackle pertinent issues of service delivery.
“We have made a resolution to seek borrowing powers from the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing to the tune of $5 435 000,” he said.
Clr Chinyanganya bemoaned the time frame that Government usually takes to consider the request.
“Our main challenge is that the process takes time, we can be turned down despite the fact that the issues we want to address are critical such as water, sewer reticulation and street lighting,” he said.
Clr Chinyanganya said they were not looking at borrowing $5,5 million as cash, but establish partnerships.
“On issues like street lighting, we can engage in partnerships with the suppliers so that they install and recover their money through advertisements over a specified period,” he said.
Clr Chinyanganya said the proposed money to be borrowed was meant for key service delivery aspects only.
“Part of the money will be used to buy a tipper, two service pick-ups and five motor bikes,” he said.
