DANCER Peter Kagomera (pictured) is on the brink of rejoining Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo, as the sungura ace seeks the approval of fans.
A decade ago, Kagomera was discovered on the streets and quickly became an integral part of the band until he was dismissed for gross misconduct.
Despite his undeniable talent, Macheso’s team, including former manager William Tsandukwa, lost patience with Kagomera, which ultimately led to his dismissal.
However, during a recent performance in Chitungwiza, the crowd expressed a strong desire for him to return to the band.
“Can we take him back and let him join the band?” Macheso asked, emphasising that Kagomera has fallen on hard times. The audience enthusiastically urged Macheso to accept him back, chanting, “Ngaadzoke hake!”
Kagomera, who is no stranger to trouble, is known for his off-stage antics.
He was once arrested for biting a police officer who had come to arrest him for drunkenness in 2012. As a consequence, he performed 630 hours of unpaid community service after being convicted of the offense. On several occasions, he clashed with the management team, leading them to give up on him.
Now, as Kagomera seeks a reunion with Macheso, the matter rests in the hands of management to determine his return. Macheso, who has a soft spot for the sungura “hothead,” is also guided by his management before making significant decisions.
An insider at Macheso’s camp informed the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub that Kagomera is indeed on the verge of rejoining.
“Macheso’s management will make the final decision on whether to recruit Kagomera, taking into account his track record.
“He has carried the ‘bad boy’ label for years, but it seems they are now open to engaging him. However, they will be strict to ensure he doesn’t get into trouble again,” said the insider.
In a recent interview, Kagomera admitted to his current struggles.
“I am wallowing in poverty and am even homeless at the moment. I have been pleading with Baba Sharo’s management, Tich Makahamadze and Lucky Macheso, to fully embrace my talent by accepting me back. I know I have wronged them on several occasions, but I hope they will consider my appeal,” Kagomera stated.
“As young kids, we make mistakes—not once, twice, or thrice—but there comes a time when a man matures. Responsibilities will always humble us, as is the case with me right now. I promise not to disappoint them once they accept me back.”
Kagomera, who was once evicted from his apartment in Chitungwiza, has been hopping from one ghetto to another.
The last time he was reportedly staying in Hopley Farm in Harare with strangers.
He once tried his luck with the raunchy dancer Beverly Sibanda as a dancer but their “marriage” did not last.
Previously, he performed with his own dance group, which eventually folded due to a lack of proper management.
Despite these challenges, Kagomera remains hopeful and is determined to find new opportunities in the vibrant dance scene, dreaming of a brighter future.
Macheso has remained his only hope and it appears he is on the brink of joining the popular sungura outfit known as Band revanhu.
Kagomera is among the troublesome dancers of Orchestra Mberikwazvo, who have faced disciplinary actions.
At one point, he was suspended due to his antics and almost spent a month jobless.
He returned and publicly apologised for his behaviour after the suspension.
