Kaikeni poised to shake up film industry

Actress and producer Sipilisiwe Kaikeni believes that a focused new generation of female producers can make a difference within the industry.

Kaikeni, who is currently working on a feature film titled ‘Munhumutapa’ as the production manager, said working with Nakai Tsuro has been eye-opening.

The duo has been working on feature films and series.

Kaikeni was recently featured in the “Mukadota Reloaded” drama series as Mai Rwizi, wife of Baba Rwizi, played by Admire “Bhutisi” Kuzhangaira.

She said she is determined to bring diverse perspectives and stories to the forefront, challenging traditional norms and stereotypes.

“I have worked with Nakai Tsuro, and she is a very humble director and producer. I always feel so free working with her. She means business, same as Bhutisi he is always fun to be around.

“The current film I am working on is Munhumutapa. It’s a feature film, and I am the production manager. I feel great about working on such a big project, thanks to Stephen Mutsago, who chose me for that opportunity.

“The biggest obstacle we face as female artists in the industry is that we are looked down upon. Also, some men take advantage of the ladies by saying, “Love me first so that I give you a role.

“Though I have never encountered that situation myself, I hear most ladies saying so,” she said.

Kaikeni has been a driving force behind the movement to promote female representation in film.

“My advice to young female artists is to respect yourself. Your time to shine will come. Don’t take shortcuts. Refuse to be taken advantage of. Know your worth.

“My vision for women in film in the next few years is that we take charge of this industry; we are very capable of directing our films. If we are united, we can be successful and recognised globally,” she said.
