Just when you thought the internet had finally clocked out of its “The Polygamist” obsession, someone else gets bitten by the Jonasi bug.
Weeks after the Netflix telenovela premiered, people across the world are still unpacking every lie, side-eye and “my husband would never” moment.
The Netflix series has sparked conversations about relationships, betrayal and the complicated world created by its unforgettable characters.
We’ve already seen celebrities including Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, Davido and Joe Jonas join the conversation.
Now, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss has also had her Jonasi Gomora moment.
Burruss shared an edited photo of herself alongside Jonasi Gomora, played by Sdumo Mtshali, and if you’ve survived all 22 episodes, you’ll know that standing next to him is already a questionable life choice. Her caption read: “POV: You see the red flags… Do you stay or do you keep walking? Me? I Do. I Did. I’m Done.”
If that sounds oddly specific, that’s because Burruss has recently gone through a very public divorce from Todd Tucker after more than a decade of marriage. The couple, who married in 2014 and share two children, ended their relationship after Burruss said an incident involving alleged infidelity became the moment she decided she could no longer continue with the marriage.
She has also spoken about feeling that the lack of accountability afterwards played a role in her decision.
The timing also ties into her one-woman stage production, “I Do. I Did. I’m Done”, where Burruss uses music and storytelling to reflect on love, heartbreak and moving forward after the end of her marriage.
Which makes the Jonasi comparison almost too perfect. Because if there’s one thing “The Polygamist” fans have learnt, it’s that the red flags are usually waving long before anyone admits they saw them.
The Jonasi memes clearly aren’t going anywhere.
If anything, they’ve become the internet’s favourite way of warning a friend about a questionable relationship – IOL.
