adminZIMBABWE’S participation at the International Karate Organisation Matushima World Cup in Durban, South Africa, next weekend is hanging in the balance.
The team of nine fighters and four officials is struggling to raise at least US$8 000 for their upkeep during the tournament.
Decorated karateka Sensei Samson Muripo, a firm world title hopeful, revealed the fighters’ plight.
Muripo, who in 2009 scooped gold in Japan at the first International Karate Organisation Kyokushin Kaikan First World Karate Tournament, added that fighters have been hard at training but their focus is now being diverted by financial uncertainty.
“I have no doubt we have a team that can compete and make the country proud at this World Cup, once the logistics are put in place. Unfortunately our efforts are being curtailed by lack of sponsorship as we have no money for food, accommodation and upkeep during the tournament.
“We are appealing to the corporate world to come on board and assist us with US$8 000 for the nine fighters,” said the soft-spoken Muripo, a fourth dan black belt.
Zimbabwe wants to send three fighters per category with Muripo being joined by Brian Chiringa and Austine Mucheni in the middleweight category; while Sensei Tawanda Mufundisi, Shadreck Chigombe and Phumulani Maphosa will compete with the lightweights.
Admire Chingozhoro, Sensei Liquor Khumalo and Naison Chituwa are set to battle it out in the heavyweight category.
Stephen Charandura, the Zimbabwe Karate Union secretary-general, is head of delegation.
