SCOTTLAND defender Kevin Moyo believes their defeat to ZPC Kariba was a wake-up call ahead of Sunday’s CAF Champions League clash against Petro de Luanda at the National Sports Stadium.
The Zimbabwean champions host the Angolan side in the first leg of their second-round tie, seeking an advantage to take into the return fixture in Angola.
Scottland approach the encounter after the 1-0 defeat by ZPC Kariba at Nyamhunga cost them top spot in the Castle Lager Premiership. They remain on 61 points, two behind Hardrock, with four league matches remaining.
Moyo, who has been an integral player for the club, believes the setback should sharpen the players’ focus as they switch to continental football.
“The defeat to ZPC Kariba was a wake-up call for us. We know we have to improve, and everyone understands the importance of responding positively on Sunday,” said Moyo.
“We have to work hard in training, correct our mistakes and make sure we are ready. This is a different competition, but the demands remain the same, concentration, discipline and giving everything for the team.”
Scottland’s recent league form has allowed Hardrock to seize the initiative in the championship race. The defending champions have won three of their last seven league matches, while their rivals have recorded seven successive victories.
For Moyo, the immediate priority is to produce a stronger performance against Petro and put Scottland in a favourable position before travelling.
“We want to make home advantage count. It is important to get a positive result here so that we go to Angola with an advantage,” he said.
“But we know we have to earn that through our performance. We need to defend well, take our chances and remain focused throughout the match. Everyone has a responsibility to help the team.”
Scottland progressed from the opening round after beating Eswatini’s Nsingizini Hotspurs 1-0 at home and holding them to a goalless draw away. Petro eliminated Mozambique’s UD Songo to reach this stage.
Meanwhile, Scottland secretary-general Fortune “Giant” Bgwoni has urged supporters to rally behind the team as they pursue a place in the group stages.
“We are calling on our supporters and football fans across Zimbabwe to come to the National Sports Stadium and get behind the boys,” said Bgwoni.
“Scottland are representing the country in this competition, and that support can give the players an extra lift. We want a strong atmosphere that encourages the team from the first whistle to the last.”
Attendance is currently restricted to 10 000 spectators under a CAF directive. Admission is US$10 for the rest of the ground and US$30 for VIP.
“Let us fill the available seats and support the team responsibly. We urge fans to arrive early, follow the stadium instructions and help make this a successful occasion,” said Bgwoni.
“The players have an important job on the pitch, and we want everyone in the stands to play their part by giving them positive support.”
