KAROI Town Council is stepping up efforts to reduce flooding, targeting the installation of 300 culvert pipes across the town by the end of the year.
This comes at a time when some parts of Zimbabwe are expected to receive flash floods during the 2026-2027 El Niño-induced rainy season.
The local authority has received 233 of the pipes it procured, with the remaining supplies expected in early November.
Town Secretary, Mr Tongai Mandude, told Zimpapers that installations had begun in flood-prone residential areas as council moves to improve stormwater drainage ahead of the rainy season.
“To date, 233 out of the expected 300 culvert pipes have been received, marking progress in council’s efforts to improve stormwater drainage infrastructure and reduce flooding risks, particularly during the rainy season,” he said.
Installations have already started in Chiedza, Chikangwe, Westview and Flamboyant suburbs, with eight culverts installed so far.
“Several culverts have been installed so far across these areas, with further installations expected as the programme progresses,” he said.
The initiative seeks to improve stormwater flow, minimise flooding, protect properties and public infrastructure and enhance the safety of residents in vulnerable communities.
The programme is also in line with President Mnangagwa’s Call for Action: No Compromise on Service Delivery initiative, as Council intensifies investment in infrastructure and proactive measures to address challenges associated with heavy rainfall.
Mr Mandude said Council remained committed to building a safer, more resilient and sustainable town through infrastructure development that responds to the needs of residents.
