KASI Lunatics have released a single Oskido in honour of Oskido (real name Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa) as a way to entice him to sign the group under his Kalawa Jazzmee record label. The Bulawayo-based hip hop/kwaito group hopes to have one of their songs recorded by Kalawa after apparently being identified by one of the Kalawa DJs last year.
One of the group members, B Milezy (real name Freddy Maseko) said they gave one of the Kalawa Jazzmee DJs, Bobster their music last year in December when he was in the country for an end of year gig hosted by his stable.
“One of our friends from South Africa, Dignity Moyo knew DJ Bobster and gave him our music. Bobster liked it and promised to assist in negotiating a recording deal with Kalawa Jazzmee,” he said.
However, when the group asked Bobster about the recording deal earlier this year, the DJ said he was busy working on other projects and would assist them when he was free.
“We called Bobster this year and he told us he was recording his album. He said he would assist us to negotiate the recording deal whenever he gets time,” said Milezy.
South Africa-based Dignity Moyo who introduced Kasi Lunatics to DJ Bobster had no kind words for the group yesterday, saying they were being overzealous.
“I told them (Kasi Lunatics) that everything was in order but they are now being overzealous going to the media before we finalise their recording contract from this end.
“They should be patient and wait for Bobster to finish working on his album,” he said.
Asked if Kasi Lunatics had spoken to Oskido – the founder of Kalawa, who has assisted various artistes, Milezy said they had not done so as their link was Bobster.
Milezy said since the process of recording under Kalawa seemed cumbersome he decided to use a shorter route by composing a song dedicated to the Kalawa boss so as to reach out to the South Africa based guru.
The kwaito/rap track which was released two weeks ago features Subzero, another Kasi Lunatics member. Some of the lyrics are: Son of Mdlongwa, I am writing you this letter through this song. Dignity is going to deliver this song to you . . . Kalawa is calling my name, I feel it close . . . Oskido ngivaya naye.”
Kasi Lunatics is one of the rap groups based in Bulawayo. Hits from the group that include Tatopinda, Baphi abantwana and Masenza have proved popular with hip-hop lovers.
