katsande now chiefs’ vice captain

JOHANNESBURG – Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has explained the leadership structure at the club which has seen Willard Katsande take on a vice-captain role at Naturena. Siphiwe Tshabalala was handed the armband last season and will continue to share the duties with goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.Katsande, who skippers Zimbabwe, is next in line in seniority, along with new signing Ramahlwe Mphahlele and experienced pair Tsepo Masilela and Bernard Parker.

“’Shabba’ (Tshabalala) is club captain,” says Komphela.

“Two, Itu is team captain. Three we have got Tsepo, Katsande, Parker and Ramahlwe Mphahlele as vice-captains at Chiefs,” adds Komphela, who was impressed with Lewis Macha and Sibusiso Khumalo’s debuts in the Carling Black Label Champion Cup win over Orlando Pirates this past weekend.

Meanwhile, AmaZulu coach Joey Antipas expects Mabhuti Khenyeza to play a key role for the promotion hopefuls in 2016/17.

Usuthu recently recruited Khenyeza on a one-year deal from Golden Arrows.

The 34-year-old, who has scored over 100 goals in the PSL, will partner Siyabonga Nomvethe upfront at the NFD outfit.

“Mabhuti will be a massive acquisition for the club because we know what he’s made of,” Antipas told the club’s website.

“He is a big personality and I’m certain he will help the youngsters and others playing around him and ‘Bhele’ Nomvethe.”

Antipas is also pleased with the acquisition of Tumelo Letuka (two-year contract) and fellow defender Njabulo Ngcobo (three-year deal) from Durban Warriors and Arrows respectively.

“Njabulo is an upcoming player with a good attitude. What I like about him is his aggressiveness, he’s a no-nonsense defender,” said Antipas.

“Tumelo is an experienced left-footer who will contribute a lot and also help the younger players around him.” – KickOff
