THE church has a big role to play in this country, including helping the next generation of leaders from being caught up in drugs and substance abuse, Mashonaland West State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Marian Chombo, has said.

She said this in her welcome remarks during the Roman Catholic’s Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Guild National Congress that is being held at the Chinhoyi University of Technology’s grounds.

“Every person has a right and freedom to choose his/her own religion to worship. I am very happy that you have chosen our province to spread the gospel,” said Min Chombo.

“Churches play a critical role in nation building through education, health and spiritual intervention.

“It is the role of the church to pray for the nation.

“We are losing the future leaders of tomorrow through drug and substance abuse.

“As a church, it is our duty and obligation to pray for the young generation for them to desist from taking drug and substance abuse.

“The church leadership also played an important role during the liberation struggle from the colonialists that led to our emancipation.”

She added:

“The President’s mantra is that a nation is built and prayed for by its own people.

“It is our duty as a church to complement the government’s efforts in the growth and development of the nation.”
