The message of peace and unity was amplified during the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) closing show with the golden voice of Africa – Salif Keita – and mbira princess Hope Masike collaborating to perform Africa, a song which encourages love and togetherness.
The closing show held on Sunday evening at the Harare Gardens did not only bring Africans to one arena, but was a global attraction, bringing together nationals from beyond Africa’s borders.
In light of the xenophobic attacks in neighbouring South Africa, the song rejuvenated hope of a united and violence-free continent.
Close to 5,000 festival goers who had filled the gardens sang along despite the fact that the song is a French composition. But it was when Masike blended into the song with Shona lyrics that fans went into a frenzy.
Before performing Africa, the Malian afro-pop musician who performed with an 11-member band had introduced Masike to a thunderous applause from the crowd.
Being a proficient French speaker herself, the songstress did not disappoint as she blended in perfectly. Keita who had earlier eulogised Masike could be spotted clapping his hands in what could be interpreted as approval to the mbira princess’ performance.
Her mbira and shaker merged with Keita’s band – which among other instruments played a kora – to create an authentic African sound, much to the crowd’s delight.
The lighting and stage effects brought a captivating aspect to the performance which saw a professional five-minute fireworks display creating a beautiful sight in the sky.
Their performance brought to an end the well organised Hifa festivities which saw the birth of numerous collaborations among local and international artistes.
