Ketchup or Makeup? – Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty collaboration with MSCHF receives mixed reactions

Rihanna is no stranger to breaking boundaries and introducing something new in the beauty industry, from being the most inclusive brand to dabbling with the food industry.

The 34-year-old billionaire just launched a new makeup palette in collaboration with everyone’s favourite condiment, ketchup. The Brooklyn-based art collective has partnered with Fenty beauty to launch a lip gloss set that contains both makeup and ketchup. And, of course, with Rihanna, there’s always a catch.

The lip gloss set comes with six identical sachets that could either have the Fenty Gloss Bomb or the condiment. Consumers will only find out which is which after purchasing the $25 (R423) set and opening each sachet.

Taking to Instagram, Fenty Beauty announced the news with the caption, “MSCHF is up to mischief again! Fenty Beauty is the target of their latest collaboration art drop, ‘Ketchup or Makeup?’ We love both!”

This limited edition drop will be shipped worldwide and can only be purchased on ketchupormakeup.com. Co-founder of MSCHF, Daniel Greenberg, spoke to Food and Wine and cleared the confusion about the flavour of the lip gloss.

“The gloss is not ketchup flavoured, but that would have been cool. It’s just basic Fenty lip gloss,” Daniel said. This is not the first time the food brand has collaborated with a famous face. They also did a very controversial collaboration with rapper and singer Lil Nas X’s ‘Satan Shoes’.

This collaboration also sent social media users into a frenzy for obvious reasons, and it caused the brand a lot of legal issues.

Although Rihanna is always supported by her fanbase called ‘The Navy’, this time around, some were left angered. Firstly by the fact the singer hasn’t released music in six years. Others accused her of preying on her fans with this collaboration saying, “So if you get lip gloss, it’s just an open packet that can be sealed? Wouldn’t that dry out fast? Also, imagine spending money on ketchup packets?”

Another added, “I could buy a gloss and bottle of ketchup for that price, and they would both close.” Another unimpressed user added, “I get that creativity is lacking in the makeup world, but you don’t have to resort to this.” – News24
