LONG-SERVING Mbira DzeNharira member Chaka Gwedeza has left the group to pursue a solo career.
Gwedeza, who has been with the Tendayi Gahamadze-led outfit for over a decade, has formed a “pact” with two female mbira players – Lioness and Magumbo.
The trio has been holding a series of shows under the banner Mbira Explosion.
The clique spokesperson and publicity chief, Lioness, said the group was formed to give mbira lovers variety.
“When the group was formed, some thought we wanted to destabilise other mbira outfits but we are all adults who can make informed decisions.
“I am glad that when Chaka Gwedeza came up with the idea, we immediately embraced it since it was meant for the benefit of all of us.
“As we speak right now, we have been touring many parts of the country promoting this clique,” she said.
Lioness said it was high time artists take a risk when they feel they can move on and go solo.
“We all started from somewhere, either as dancers or just instrumentalists, but we were gifted composers.
“We were never shy to express ourselves and I am happy that many people have embraced us.
“The same applies to Mukoma Chaka and Magumbo, who have been itching for recognition.”
The trio has since won a permanent slot at Camp & Caravan Complex at Warren Park D Complex.
“Mbira is a genre with a huge following and we are reaping the rewards of hard work as we recently clinched a slot to perform at Mereki shops on Saturdays.
“It’s a slot that we have been yearning for because well-to-do people frequent the place and chances of being noticed are there,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mbira DzeNharira has since roped in one of their academy mbira players to fill in the void.
