BEWARE what you swallow — deadly fake Cloxacillin capsules are now circulating in Zimbabwe!
The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued a warning about the illegal distribution of falsified Cloxacillin 250mg capsules, which are being peddled by unknown sources.
Cloxacillin is a vital antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those caused by penicillin-resistant staphylococci, such as skin, bone, joint, and respiratory tract infections.
Taking the fake version could mean treatment failure, dangerous side effects, or even death.
In a statement, MCAZ Director General Richard Rukwata revealed that the bogus drugs are being pushed onto the market by shadowy operators, with Gartats Investments named as one of the culprits.
The counterfeit capsules are easy to spot if you know what to look for:
• Fake: Sharp-cornered brown labels
• Real: Rounded orange labels from Varichem Pharmaceuticals
• Fake: No markings on the capsules
• Real: Clearly printed “V-CLOX 250”
• Fake: No aluminium foil seal
• Real: Properly sealed with foil
Rukwata warned the fake meds pose serious health threats, including antimicrobial resistance due to ineffective treatment, and said all suspected stock must be quarantined and submitted to MCAZ for destruction by 1 August 2025.
“This is a public safety emergency,” said Rukwata.
MCAZ says it is working with law enforcement and pharmaceutical stakeholders to track and remove the dangerous capsules.
The authority advised members of the public to stay alert, buy only from licensed pharmacies, and report any suspicious meds.
