PYONGYANG – The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) celebrates its 65th national day on September 9. It was on this day in 1948 that the DPRK was established. Sixty-five years on, the DPRK government is now paying primary attention to the people’s living conditions and concentrating on the stabilisation and betterment of the people’s livelihood even under difficult conditions where everything is in short supply. The government is vigorously pushing ahead with the building of a socialist economic power with a view to making the people well off in the near future.

The convenience of the people is taken into consideration preferentially and absolutely. Even when erecting a building, efforts go into setting it up in accordance with the aspirations and demands of the people under the slogan, “Everything for the sake of the people and everything in reliance upon the masses!”

Over the past twelve months many buildings, which satisfy the people’s needs for material and cultural well-being were put up including the people’s theatre, the Rungna People’s pleasure park, and towns and rural communities are being spruced up.

Supreme leader Kim Jong Un is administering the people-oriented politics.

Under his wise leadership the Korean people are convinced of the morrow of their socialist country which will become richer and more powerful, and are turning out vigorously for the building of a prosperous and powerful country rallied closely in one mind and with one will.

Tourism is considered as one of the main sectors for economic development and the DPRK is also directing its efforts to developing tourism as one of the country’s major industries.

Boasting an abundance of tourism resources, the country has a bright future for the development of tourism.

Regular air route will be opened between Pyongyang, Lake Samji and Wonsan for local and foreign tourists and the country also plans to open new air routes between Pyongyang and Chinese cities like Shanghai and Yanji.

Air services will also be available for people in Southeast Asia and Europe to come to the DPRK for sightseeing.

There are plans to build economic development zones in each province to serve as tourist destinations. A number of fitness centres, service complexes and souvenir and duty-free shops will be built for tourists.

DPRK is currently building ski resort on Masik Pass located in the southeastern Kangwon Province, which includes a ski ground with an altitude of more than 1,360 meters above the sea level and a range of ski runs with a total length of 110 km, a hotel, heliport and cableway.

Marshal Kim Jong Un, First Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, First Chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission and Supreme Commander of the Korean People’s Army, gave on-site guidance several times at the ski resort on Masik Pass and then that project is near completion.

The special adviser to the Secretary General of the United Nations on Sports said that the resort is supposed to receive foreign tourists as well as South Korean tourists like Mt. Kumgang resort.

Recent inter-Korean relations are slowly making progress amid defusing tensions between the two sides.

The two countries agreed to reopen a joint industrial zone in the DPRK’s border town of Kaesong and to hold reunion of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

However, differences remain on the date to start Mt. Kumgang tour talks.

Pyongyang expressed regret on Seoul’s calls to delay Mt. Kumgang tour talks. The DPRK requests South Korea to reconsider its actions.

Last month the DPRK also condemned a US-South Korea drill as “war preparedness” and “confrontational policy,” warning it only cast shadow to the hard-won atmosphere for dialogue.

The DPRK said that “if the U.S. truly wants denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula, it should stop the nuclear blackmail against the DPRK.”

It reaffirmed that “the army and people of the DPRK will neither give up nor make even a step backward in the road for ensuring peace and security of the country and building a powerful and prosperous country.”

Recently the situation on the Korean peninsula has turned to the road of detente from that of confrontation. – Embassy of the Democratic People Republic of Korea.
