ALICK Macheso has reflected on his musical journey as he embraces a father-figure role in the entertainment industry.

Having turned 57 on June 10, the sungura ace acknowledged that aging brings wisdom and a sense of responsibility to create a lasting legacy.

He believes that empowering fellow creatives both emerging musicians and those who once thrived but are now struggling has become an integral part of his mission.

During a recent performance at Zebra Village in Mbare, Harare, Macheso said:

“When I turned 57 last month, I realised that I am not just an ordinary musician who should play music and go home. I am now required to empower others.”

Drawing inspiration from the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, who passed away in 2019, Macheso shared the weight of his new role.

“Tuku was a father figure before he died. He invested a lot in his arts centre in Norton, which continues to thrive. He encouraged me to empower others and make a difference in this sector,” Macheso noted.

Macheso aspires to be remembered not just for his solo achievements but for the positive impact he has on others in the industry.

“It was the same Tuku who blessed my musical journey by sharing some of the key nuggets for the growth of the sector. This has made me realise that we need to empower each other and be counted among the best influencers.

“There are more blessings in empowering others both materially and morally, especially in this career where many have fallen due to lack of support.”

His offices at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex, and his home in Waterfalls, often host artists eager to collaborate with him.

“Many of these stars have been coming to my place asking for all forms of help.

“There are even some of them calling me as far as Binga, Hwange and Bulawayo who need my expertise.

“I usually refer some of them to my management, who then give them slots to feature in our shows as supporting acts,” he said.

Macheso emphasised that providing performance opportunities was one of the best ways to uplift others.

“While we do offer some financial support, I prefer not to disclose names for professional reasons,” he added.

He revealed that his own challenging upbringing has instilled in him a strong belief in generosity.

“In life, we must cultivate a spirit of giving and sharing for the success of the industry. The Lord will not bless me if I don’t give back to others because sharing is key.

“We need to share the little we have to bring smiles to the lives of others.”

Macheso’s musical journey has also garnered academic attention, with scholars like Vimbai Chamisa using his work for their research.

She used his work as a reference for her Doctor of Philosophy thesis with the University of South Africa, attracting the attention of the musical world.

It was during this period that many realised that Macheso’s impact had caught the attention of academic researchers.

“This recognition (Vimbai Chamisa’s reference) has made me realise that we are touching people’s lives.”

Macheso stressed that this acknowledgment motivates him to continue working hard and giving back to his community.

“To be honest, I feel humbled when such things are happening in my life. I never believed sungura would have such an impact as is the case now.

“I now urge people to value it and be original if we want to maintain our dominance.”

His management team, led by Tichaona Makahamadze and Lucky Nyandimu, confirmed Macheso’s busy schedule both on and off stage.

“Baba Sharo has wholeheartedly assumed the father-figure role in showbiz. Our phones are always buzzing with calls from fellow musicians seeking his help, and he makes time for them.

“At times, we feel sorry for him because he is one of the people who is generous and willing to assist others who need help,” said Makahamadze.

He noted that Macheso’s background had an impact on his way of life.

“He always tells us about how hard it was for him growing up and the people who came into his life when he needed their help.

“As management, we also learn from him because we can only copy the good things being championed by our leader. We also believe in teamwork, and this is the perfect opportunity that we have working with someone of his calibre,” he said.

Over the years, Macheso has shared the stage with some of the yesteryear stars, including Hosiah Chipanga and the late Cephas Mashakada, among other youthful musicians.

At one point, he had a countrywide tour alongside Tryson Chimbetu in his early career.

Of late, he has been touring with Peter Moyo for a few selected shows.

Tendai Manatsa and his wife Selmor Mtukudzi had the opportunity to share the stage with Macheso.

Joining this long list is Tedious Muchapedza Matsito Junior, who once stayed at Macheso’s Waterfalls home receiving guitar lessons.

Macheso’s commitment to uplifting fellow artists illustrates the profound impact of mentorship and community in the creative industry.

As he continues to share his platform and resources, Macheso embodies the spirit of collaboration and generosity, ensuring that his legacy will resonate beyond his own musical accomplishments.
